Thoughts on Starting: An entry for other starting authors.
In case other starting writers are reading, I would like to express the thoughts I am having at the start of my public writing career. I am now in the process of submitting poetry and short stories. I understand we all must start somewhere. I have been trying to build a writer's "Resume" if it is even as a term of importance. However, I have been looking into many free sites - I suppose they are great for getting my work seen, promoting me and this site, and many also have works that are very worthy and talented. Do we, starting writers, go for dollars since our art is also time, effort, and work? I have not yet submitted to a "paying" market; I figure most want to see that you have been seen elsewhere before they take writers seriously.
Also I am looking into organizations for writers, many of which look into the publications and payments for services.
Advice for others? Submit. Find sites, magazines, journals, websites, etc. that you would support and that will support you. I hope to someday receive financial compensation, but right now I'm building my own confidence as well.
Rejection must also be expected. I have received several now, but it was not as crushing as I had thought it would be. It was the fear that also kept me from starting years ago... Push through, fellow writers, and realize that following a passion is worth the efforts.
Perhaps, this is the educator in me, wanting to express the lessons I am learning as I go. I have several students who long to be writers, editors, publishers, and if one happens to read this, I want them to know I've gone through the process, mentally and physically too.
UPDATE : The waiting game is still a killer. I have now submitted to "paying markets" and continue to wait. Sometimes the wait ends with the rejection, but you cannot let it slow you down. Life and art must go on, so make sure you try to find places that reflect or need your voice.
